Q: What is OneDrive used for?

A: OneDrive is the nearest SharePoint integration to DropBox. It's comprised of a few functions including;

  • Files in OneDrive are stored in SharePoint which makes it a bit confusing. OneDrive isn't a file management tool, it is more of a syncing tool between your computer/phone/tabley and the cloud (SharePoint is the cloud).
  • The OneDrive app allows you to sync the files stored in SharePoint to and from your local computer or device.
  • You also get a personal OneDrive folder that only you can see (unless you share it but we suggest you don't usually do that).
  • We would use that folder for files that are only for you and generally not for storing company files.
  • Using the OneDrive app, you can also connect to file storage areas created in Teams (that are also stored in SharePoint). The Teams storage locations are the best place to store company files and access is based on who the Teams teams members are.
